US CMA Eligibility in India: Who Can Actually Apply (2026 Rules)

The eligibility rules for US CMA are simpler than most students think, but one detail — the seven-year window — is misunderstood constantly and causes real problems later.

The three requirements

To hold the US CMA designation, IMA requires all three:

  1. Active IMA membership plus CMA program enrolment
  2. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, in any discipline — or an IMA-approved professional certification
  3. Two continuous years of relevant professional experience in management accounting or financial management

"Can I do US CMA after 12th?"

This deserves a precise answer, because the marketing around it is often misleading.

You can begin preparing after 12th. Many of our students do exactly this, and starting early is a genuine advantage.

You cannot be certified without a bachelor's degree. Any degree — engineering, arts, science, commerce — from a recognized university.

So the honest phrasing is: after 12th you can start the journey, and you complete it as your degree completes. When a website tells you "12th pass eligible" with no further detail, they are describing the starting line and letting you assume it is the finish line.

The seven-year window that trips people up

You may sit and pass both exam parts before you have the degree or the experience. You then have seven years from the date you pass your second part to submit both.

Miss that window and your exam passes expire — you would have to sit both parts again. Students who pass at 21 and drift through unrelated work for years occasionally discover this the hard way.

What counts as work experience

Two continuous years of full-time work (40+ hours per week) in management accounting or financial management. Part-time counts pro-rata at 20+ hours per week, to be completed within four years.

Qualifying roles include financial analysis, budget preparation, cost analysis, auditing, financial reporting and management accounting.

Not qualifying: internships, clerical bookkeeping, trainee positions and non-technical roles. This surprises people — a data-entry accounting job may not count.

The experience can be earned anywhere in the world, and before or after passing the exams.

Do professional qualifications replace the degree?

Yes. IMA accepts several professional certifications in place of a bachelor's degree, which is why CA and ACCA holders often find the path shorter than expected. Verify your specific certification directly with IMA before relying on this.

Is there an age limit?

No minimum and no maximum. We have taught students in their late thirties switching careers and students still in college. Neither is unusual.

Non-commerce backgrounds

Any degree qualifies, and engineering graduates often perform strongly — the analytical reasoning suits them, and the mathematics is not demanding. Budget slightly more time for accounting fundamentals in the first six weeks, and the disadvantage disappears.

A note on verification

Eligibility rules are set by IMA and can change. Everything above reflects the position as of 2026, but before making a financial commitment, verify the current rules directly at imanet.org. Any institute that discourages you from checking the official source is not one you should trust with your money.
